If you are looking to add weather targeting to a nationwide Facebook campaign targeting USA, Canada, or Australia, there’s a specific way you must set your campaign up in Facebook in order to ensure compatibility with WeatherAds.
Because WeatherAds resolves large territories into much more granular custom radius points, and Facebook imposes strict limits on the number of custom locations you can geo target per ad set (200), it is not possible to weather target large countries such as USA, Canada, or Australia within a single ad set.
Instead, you will need to create multiple ad sets, each targeting several states. This guide will show you the most effective way to do this.
Note: This guide is specifically for USA, Canada, and Australia. Campaigns targeting any other countries should work fine within a single ad set.
Why it’s necessary to create multiple ad sets for USA, Canada & Australia
WeatherAds works by automatically splitting large regions such as countries or states down into smaller constituent parts, so that it can apply weather targeting at the most granular level possible.
When your weather targeting goes live, WeatherAds then dynamically removes any locations from Facebook that do not match your targeting parameters and then re-inserting those locations back in when they match your weather targeting rules. This way your ads are only being displayed in areas that match your weather targeting rules at any given time.
This means that if you simply enter ‘USA’ into your ad set’s geo targeting settings, WeatherAds has to split this up into over 3000 radius points. Since Facebook imposes a limit of 200 custom locations per ad set, WeatherAds doesn’t have enough capacity within a single ad set to operate and therefor your weather targeting won’t be able run.
Below are some instructions on how to set up your nationwide campaign in Facebook so that it can be weather targeted in WeatherAds.
Setting up your Facebook campaign for the whole of the USA
If you are looking to target the whole of the USA, you will need to create 17 ad sets (per creative variant), and add state-level geo targeting to each. If you have 2 creative variants (e.g. a 'sunny ad' and a 'rainy ad') then you will need to create twice the amount of ad sets - however this is fairly straightforward to do by duplicating the 17 that you initially created. This would mean that the geo targeting that you have already entered into the initial 17 should be copied over as well. You can either do this within the same campaign, or duplicate over so that you have 2 campaigns with 17 ad sets each. Which way you decide to do this is entirely up to you.
Below is a table showing the most efficient method to spin out your ad set geo targeting. Simply add the state names into the location targeting settings of each corresponding ad set.
Ad set 1 will target California and North Carolina, Ad Set 2 will target Alaska and Colorado, and so on.
|Ad Set||State||Number of locations|
|Ad Set 1||California||118|
|Ad Set 2||Alaska||108|
|Ad Set 3||Idaho||105|
|Ad Set 4||Kansas||104|
|Ad Set 5||Minnesota||104|
|Ad Set 6||Texas||104|
|Ad Set 7||Montana||102|
|Ad Set 8||Wisconsin||79|
|Ad Set 9||Alabama||76|
|Ad Set 10||Iowa||74|
|Ad Set 11||Georgia||73|
|Ad Set 12||Illinois||69|
|Ad Set 13||Nebraska||89|
|Ad Set 14||Louisiana||64|
|Ad Set 15||Pennsylvania||58|
|Ad Set 16||Tennessee||54|
|Ad Set 17||South Dakota||53|
Targeting only certain states in the USA
If you wish to target only specific states rather than the whole of the US, then you won't need to create as many ad sets. Below is a table detailing all 50 states and the number of locations within each. When creating your ad sets, add in as many states as you would like, whilst still remaining within the 200 limit per ad set that Facebook imposes. If you exceed this number, WeatherAds will be unable to weather target your campaign.
When you're done creating your ad sets, simply import them into WeatherAds to add weather targeting to them. If you end up with quite a few, get in touch with us and we can batch target them for you our end.

Setting up your Facebook campaign for the whole of Canada
Canada is much smaller than the US in terms of population density and population centers, and therefore the amount of ad sets needed to target the whole country is also much fewer - only 5. Below is a table detailing the most effective way to group the provinces/ territories together:
|Ad Set 1||New Brunswick|
|Newfound land and Labrador|
|Ad Set 2||Ontario|
|Prince Edward Island|
|Ad Set 3||Nova Scotia|
|Ad Set 4||Yukon|
|Ad Set 5||British Columbia|
Setting up your Facebook campaign for the whole of Australia
In order to be able to weather target the whole of Australia on Facebook, you will need to create a separate ad set for each of the Australian states, per creative variant. So if you only have 1 creative variant, e.g. ‘sunny ad’ – then you will end up with 1 campaign containing 6 or 7 ad sets (depending on if you wish to include Tasmania). If you have 2 creative variants, e.g. ‘sunny ad’ and ‘rainy ad’ then you will need to create 12 (or if you include Tazmania, then 14) ad sets – this can either be split between 2 separate campaigns, or housed within a single campaign.
|Ad Set 1||Western Australia|
|Ad Set 2||Northern Territory|
|Ad Set 3||South Australia|
|Ad Set 4||Queensland|
|Ad Set 5||New South Wales|
|Ad Set 6||Victoria|
|Ad Set 7||Tasmania|
